40s dress in a rich blue velvet. High v-neckline. Long sleeves with zipped cuffs. Fitted waistband with a decorative ruched band attaching at the hip, and tying to the back below the zipper. Small meandering beading to the top of the bands over the front hip. Softly a-lined skirt. Back metal zipper to fasten. Has had a lining in light blue-grey synthetic sewn in which doesn't look original to the dress. No labels, possibly handmade.
The dress is not labeled with a size but fits approx like a M-L. For your best fit please refer to the measurements. I would estimate for a large UK12 or a small UK14.
Chest: 38" (velvet and lining is quite thick, so I would think this would best fit slightly smaller)
Waist: 32" (velvet and lining is quite thick, so I would think this would best fit slightly smaller)
Shoulder to waist: 15.5"
Shoulder seam to shoulder seam: 16"
Sleeve from underarm to cuff: 16"
(There is a 1.5" hem on this)
-Has some signs of alteration on the inside, though this isn't noticeable on the outside when worn: Has been rehemmed and hem has been handsewn and cut. I also think this has had a lining added by a previous owner, though it looks like this was done later than the 40s. It's largely handsewn in but has been sewn into the sleeves and underarms, so not easily unpicked. Can't be seen when worn however.
-Two faint marks to the bodice, circled in last photo.
